Have you ever done anything in paper mache? I have. I have made fruit and other shapes that were not too large or too small. I have been playing with paper mache on and off since I was a school kid. Well tonight my latest project creating a car out of paper mache became a huge failure and I am disappointed. Yep I set out to make a car, a 1953 vette for my older son’s play.

So you are probably asking why did I choose to create a car? To answer that pondering question, an opportunity for a creative challenge came to be. You see my older son, Adam is in a community play called White Christmas. While the play’s story has its Christmas theme, Adam’s teachers take classic songs that are not so Christmassy and incorporates them into the story. it makes for more secular show that can be enjoyed by everyone. For the part of the play that needed a car, the kids are singing Car Wash Blues by the legend Jim Croce. Each show his teachers put on at the community center sell out 6 weeks before they happen, the shows are AWESOME.

Anyway I made most of the car today, everything came together really well. I thought about this a long time, I had pictures, sketches, I knew exactly how it was all going to come together. I used wire netting, newpaper, cardboard, ducttape, lots of glue and the car definitely took shape. What I didn’t expect at all was that my project would stink! As my car project began to dry, my entire house began to smell.. Phew! And with the smell there was no escape, its all over the house.

I don’t know what’s causing the smell in the paper mache, could it be my combination of items??? or could it be the wrong time of year to complete such a project ??? The projects I can think of were almost always made in late spring. Its the last day of November. Could that be it?

I am disappointed but I haven’t completely shelved the project. I have shelved the paper mache part of it and I am still making a car true to size and on poster paper.

How about you?
